Adam Scott’s Hokum Teaser Packs a Breathing-Unearthly Moment You Won’t Forget
If you’re a horror aficionado who hasn’t yet crossed paths with Damian McCarthy’s work, you’re about to. The writer-director behind 2020’s Caveat and 2024’s Oddity is poised to unveil his most high-profile film to date, boosted by a marquee name: Adam Scott from Severance. While McCarthy’s earlier features are impressively unnerving and worth hunting down (Oddity even managed to make a seasoned horror fan scream out loud), Hokum’s association with Scott is sure to bring a wider audience to the project, which just released its unsettling first teaser.
Hokum was first announced earlier this year, with the added lure of a production team linked to 2024’s standout Late Night With the Devil. Neon will distribute, following the company’s work on titles like Longlegs and Presence.
The teaser also flags a connection to Weapons as a producer, and yes—there’s a witch involved in the mix!
Beyond what we already knew, the teaser adds a touch: “When reclusive novelist Ohm Bauman (Scott) retreats to a remote Irish inn to scatter his parents’ ashes, the staff’s stories of an ancient witch haunting the honeymoon suite begin to haunt him. Soon, disturbing visions and a shocking disappearance pull him into a nightmarish confrontation with the darkest corners of his past.”
McCarthy, who is Irish, has stored his last two features in Ireland, and Hokum’s teaser signals his signature blend: a moody atmosphere, a central mystery with a supernatural thread, folk-horror shivers, and jump scares that land when you least expect them.
Hokum arrives in theaters on May 1. Will you be there for the premiere?
