Jamaica Station Overhaul: Gov. Kathy Hochul Announces $50M Redesign (2026)

Governor Kathy Hochul is set to announce a $50 million redesign of Jamaica station, transforming it into a 'world-class' transit hub. The overhaul aims to address cramped conditions and complicated connections to the subway and Kennedy Airport's AirTrain, making it a seamless and efficient travel experience for commuters. The project will be a part of her State of the State address on Tuesday, with the proposal already previewed to reporters on Monday. The redesign will focus on improving traffic flow, reducing crowding, and providing better connections to the adjacent subway and AirTrain. The station, which is 113 years old and has not been renovated in 23 years, is currently showing its age with a lack of modern amenities and a complicated layout. The station connects to the E, J, and Z subway lines at street level and to the AirTrain at the upper level. The LIRR Commuter Council chairman, Gerard Bringmann, has outlined a wishlist for the reimagined station, including elevators, more seating, additional restrooms, new dining options, and measures to protect commuters from the elements. The MTA and the Port Authority have already begun a joint effort to coordinate the project, and the MTA is also working on a half-billion-dollar effort to reconfigure the station's tracks and switches to speed up travel times. Recent improvements include a new two-track bridge at the Hall Interlocking, which aims to reduce travel times by three minutes. The project is expected to bring significant benefits to commuters and travelers, making Jamaica station a more efficient and user-friendly transit hub.
