Imagine a Christmas dimmed by darkness. That's the reality for some Monterey residents as PG&E delays power restoration, casting a shadow over their holiday cheer. When the news hit, the reaction was immediate: "Oh God. Not again," as Joanne White put it, reflecting the collective frustration. Residents in this Monterey neighborhood are facing extended outages, with restoration now pushed back to December 29th. This has transformed their festive season. "It's just been like a sad Christmas because everything is not the same. There's no, like, Christmas lights. We can't take showers. We can't charge our phones," shared Bonnie Thompson, visiting for the holidays. White added, "I miss my TV, my garbage disposal, and my heat."
But it's not all gloom. In Carmel, Flaherty's Seafood Grill managed to reopen its doors on Saturday after being forced to close earlier due to the power outages. The owner expressed relief at welcoming customers back and praised his team's resilience. "My crew was amazing. And we were we sent our reservations to a couple other restaurants," said Ken Spilfogel, the restaurant owner.
Amidst the widespread closures, a few businesses found ways to keep going. Edwin's, for instance, utilized generators to stay open. "We try to always help the businesses around us and make sure, you know, not only we're running, but everybody else can run. So we helped a few businesses with the generators as well," said Jakub Kacprzynski, owner of Edwin's.
Back in the Monterey neighborhood, the wait continues. Residents are hoping for a quicker resolution. One resident voiced a common sentiment: "It just feels like PG&E kind of, well, you know, Pebble Beach always goes out. You know, Skyline Forest always goes out. It's almost like they're used to it. They won't complain. But in fact, it's ridiculous how often it's now been happening. And we feel that they should be able to improve the situation."
