Guardians reach a minor league deal with first baseman Rhys Hoskins, and the decision is still contingent on him passing a physical. Hoskins, 32, was with Cleveland in Goodyear, Arizona, on Sunday as manager Stephen Vogt expressed his enthusiasm about adding a right-handed bat who can compete for first base or designated hitter duties.
In the lineup, Hoskins will vie for playing time against two left-handed contenders at first base: Kyle Manzardo and CJ Kayfus. Vogt told reporters that Hoskins has a real chance to come into spring camp, make an impact, and potentially crack the Opening Day roster, highlighting that his right-handed bat could fill a gap in the Guardians’ lineup.
Hoskins’ recent professional journey includes two seasons with the Milwaukee Brewers after six seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies. Last season, he hit .237 with 12 home runs in 279 at-bats, following a 2024 campaign in which he batted .214 with 26 homers and 82 RBIs.
The Brewers declined their $18 million option on Hoskins after last season, opting instead for a $4 million buyout that completed a $34 million, two-year contract. MLB.com reports that if Hoskins makes Cleveland’s Opening Day roster, he would earn $1.5 million from the Guardians.
