UC Berkeley's Diversity Programs Under Scrutiny: A Federal Probe is Demanded
UC Berkeley finds itself in hot water, facing a formal civil rights complaint accusing the university of promoting racially exclusionary programs that favor minorities. The Equal Protection Project, a conservative nonprofit, has urged the US Department of Education to launch an investigation into these alleged discriminatory practices.
The complaint highlights five specific programs at UC Berkeley, each deemed racially exclusive. The African American Student Development Office (AASD) is criticized for its 'strong racial signaling' that may deter non-Black students from participation. The Black Resource Center is accused of being discriminatory due to its description as a safe space for Black students, potentially excluding others. The Latinx Student Resource Center (LSRC) is seen as exclusionary because of its focus on the development of Chicanx/Latinx students. The African American Initiative (AAI) Scholarship, offering $8,000 annually, is targeted for requiring applicants to identify as Black/African American/African and living on the 'Afro floor'. Similarly, the Lloyd A. Edwards Scholarship, worth $5,000, is criticized for discriminating against non-Black and non-Native American students by being open only to those groups.
The Equal Protection Project emphasizes that a school's intentions are irrelevant when it comes to civil rights claims. They argue that the programs violate the Fourteenth Amendment's equal protection guarantee, as UC Berkeley is a public university. This is not the first time Berkeley has faced scrutiny from the education department. In March 2024, the university was accused of racial segregation for allegedly banning white students from the Gill Tract Community. Additionally, students sued the UC Regents in February 2025 over racial preferences in hiring and admissions. The Trump administration also launched Title VI probes into dozens of universities, including Berkeley, over potential civil rights violations tied to diversity programs.
Despite the allegations, a Berkeley spokesperson asserts the university's unwavering commitment to state and federal law, remaining silent on the recent accusations.
